Chef Boyardee and Other Pastas Recalled Due To Mislabeling

Chef Boyardee fans beware, Conagra Brands recently issued a recall of 700,125 pounds of canned spaghetti and meatballs products “over a labeling error with possible allergens.” The company decided to issue the recall after an “ingredient supplier notified Conagra that bread crumbs used in the [recalled] products might contain milk, a known allergen.” The main problem that prompted the recall was that the known allergen, milk, “was not listed on the products’ labels.”

So far the mislabeled products being recalled include the following:

• 131,718 pounds of Libby’s Spaghetti and Meatballs MADE WITH PORK, CHICKEN, AND BEEF IN TOMATO SAUCE
• 71,614 pounds of Del Pino’s SPAGHETTI & MEATBALLS MADE WITH PORK, CHICKEN, AND BEEF IN TOMATO SAUCE
• 38,31180 pounds of Hy-Top Spaghetti and Meatballs Made with Pork, Chicken, and Beef in Tomato Sauce
• 22,064 pounds of Food Hold Spaghetti & Meatballs MADE WITH PORK, CHICKEN, AND BEEF IN TOMATO SAUCE
• 21,975 pounds of Essential EVERYDAY Spaghetti with Meatballs Made With Pork, Chicken, and Beef in Tomato Sauce
• 414,424 pounds of Chef BOYARDEE Mini pasta shells & Meatballs, Pasta and Meatballs made with Pork, Chicken, and Beef in Tomato Sauce

But how can you tell if you have one of these recalled products, and what should you do about it? For starters, “the affected products were all produced on Jan. 5 and Jan. 12 in 14.75-ounce cans, with the establishment number “EST. 794M” inside the USDA inspection mark.” Additionally, the Chef Boyardee products have “package code 2100700500 and a use-by date of Dec. 26, 2018, while all other affected products have a package code of 2100701200 and a use-by date of Jan. 2, 2019.”

Fortunately, there have been no reports of illness or adverse reactions “due to the mislabeled products.” For the time being, the USDA is advising consumers to throw any recalled product away or return it to the place of purchase.
