Frito-Lay Issues Voluntary Recall Amid Salmonella Concerns

— April 24, 2017

Salmonella is back in the news, this time resulting in a voluntary recall of some Frito-Lay chip varieties. Why the recall? Well, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that there is a “potential presence of salmonella in the seasoning,” and though there have been no reported illnesses in relation to the recall as of yet, it’s best for consumers to err on the side of caution.

Salmonella is back in the news, this time resulting in a voluntary recall of some Frito-Lay chip varieties. Why the recall? Well, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that there is a “potential presence of salmonella in the seasoning” of some chip varieties, and though there have been no reported illnesses in relation to the recall as of yet, it’s best for consumers to err on the side of caution.

So if you’re planning that first cookout of the season, you might want to take extra care in avoiding all sizes of the Jalapeno Flavored Kettle Cooked potato chips and Jalapeno Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked potato chips with a “guaranteed fresh date of July 4 or prior printed on the front upper panel of the package.” A complete list of the recalled products include:

  • 12 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Sack
  • 20 count Frito-Lay Bold Mix Sack
  • 30 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Tray
  • 30 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Tray
  • 32 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Box

However, it should be noted that while the recalled individual packs of chips have a “guaranteed fresh” date of July 4 or prior printed on the front upper panel of the package, the recalled multipacks have a “use by” date of June 20 or prior. Other “products or flavors contained in these multipacks are not being recalled.

It’s important for consumers to be vigilant about potential salmonella contamination because the symptoms are rather unpleasant and include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Additionally, it can cause major infections for the young and elderly and is especially dangerous for pregnant women.

For additional information related to the recall, consumers can reach out to Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 866-272-9393. Product reimbursement is being offered via www.jalapenochiprecall.com.
