After testing positive for E. coli, a dairy farm is recalling unpasteurized, raw milk to protect the public from the bacteria that can “cause serious infections, especially in young children.” The farm, Spanish Sunrise Dairy in Yacolt, WA, actually has a “history of pathogen problems,” and posted their latest recall earlier this week on Tuesday. According to the recall notice on the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s website, “Consumers who have purchased Spanish Sonrise Dairy raw milk with a Best By date of 08-23 are urged not to drink the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

The recall itself was issued shortly after the farm’s owners had a “routine sampling conducted by the department” that “revealed the presence of toxin-producing E. coli in raw cream processed from whole raw milk.” Since the problem was found, the farm has been cooperating and working with the department to find the source of the problem.
Wondering how to tell if you have some of the recalled milk? For starters, the “recalled unpasteurized milk has a best-by date of Aug. 23.” Additionally, it was “bottled in half-gallon glass containers” and “sold directly to private customers and at one retail location, Camas Produce in Camas, WA.”
For the time being, all raw milk operations at the dairy farm have been suspended until the problem is resolved. However, consumers who have consumed any “unpasteurized milk or other raw dairy products from Spanish Sonrise Dairy and developed symptoms of E. coli infection should immediately seek medical attention.” If you or someone you know go to the doctor, be sure to mention the “possible exposure to E. coli bacteria so that the proper diagnostic tests can be performed.”
Unfortunately, E. coli has a number of different symptoms, including abdominal pain that can worsen over the course of several days. According to the recall notice:
“The infection sometimes causes hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious disease in which red blood cells are destroyed and the kidneys fail. Infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk.”
