7M Pounds of Hot Dogs and Sausages Recalled After Consumers Find Bone Fragments

— July 26, 2017

Summer time is grilling time, which means families all across the country will likely grill up a few hot dogs and sausages before fall arrives. Unfortunately, a recall has been issued for certain brands of hot dogs and sausages. Marathon Enterprises, Inc, a meat processor based in Bronx, New York, is recalling more than “seven million pounds of beef and pork hot dogs and sausages” over numerous consumer complaints. What has so many consumers up in arms? Well, it turns out quite a few have found small bone fragments in their hot dogs and sausages. In one report, a consumer actually got a “minor oral injury” from biting down on a bone fragment.

At the moment the recall includes Sabrett, Papaya King, and Western Beef brand hot dogs and sausages. It should be noted, however, that the products were “distributed and sold across the U.S. to both retailers and institutions” before the problem was discovered, so consumers should be careful to check if their package of hot dogs or sausages is included in the recall.

Wondering how to tell if your product is among those being recalled? Well, according to Marathon Enterprises, the recalled products were “produced between March 17, 2017, and July 4, 2017, and are stamped with “EST. 8854” inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s mark of inspection.” For the time being, consumers are being advised to discard the contaminated products or “return them to the location of purchase.”

In addition to issuing the recall, Marathon Enterprises released a statement that reads:

“As a fourth-generation, family-owned company, Sabrett takes its responsibility to provide safe foods very seriously with a robust internal food safety program. Sabrett deeply regrets any concern or inconvenience this has caused its loyal customers.”
