Baby and child carriers are popular among parents, so it’s unfortunate that a popular brand is recalling thousands of child carriers. Recently, Osprey Child Safety Products and Osprey Packs of Cortez, Colo. decided to recall nearly 88,000 of their Poco child carriers currently being sold in the U.S. and Canada. What happened to prompt the recall? Well, apparently the carriers have been deemed unsafe because “a child seated in the carrier can slip through the leg openings, posing a fall hazard to children.”

Recently, Osprey Child Safety Products and Osprey Packs of Cortez, Colo. decided to recall nearly 88,000 of their Poco child carriers currently being sold in the U.S. and Canada. What happened to prompt the recall? Well, apparently the carriers have been deemed unsafe because “a child seated in the carrier can slip through the leg openings, posing a fall hazard to children.”
News of this apparent safety hazard was made known when the firm began receiving reports of “children falling through the carrier leg openings.” In one of the reports, a child actually suffered a skull fracture from the fall, while another suffered “scratches to the head.”
So how can consumers check to see if they have one of these recalled carriers? Well, at the moment the recall involves “all models of Poco, Poco Plus and Poco Premium child backpack carriers manufactured between January 2012, and December 2014.” Additionally, the recalled carriers were sold in three different colors, including “Romper Red,” “Koala Grey,” and “Bouncing Blue,” and “have a metal frame and a gray padded child’s seat inside.” Consumers can also check the production date, which is “stamped on a black label sewn into the interior of the large lower zippered compartment on the back of the carrier,” to see if they own one of the recalled carriers. According to Consumer Affairs, the recalled carriers were manufactured in Vietnam and sold at “REI and specialty outdoor stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from January 2012, to December 2015, for between $200 and $300.” Consumers who have one of these carriers are encouraged to discontinue use and “contact Osprey for a free Seat Pad Insert for use along with the existing safety straps to secure the child in the carrier.”
