Litimetrics: Data + Skill = Winning Combination for Litigators

— August 1, 2017

As the old saying goes, “An army marches on its stomach.” This refers to the importance of making sure one’s people are properly fed and supplied. What about lawyers, that civilian group of warriors busy fighting for justice? The same is true, though in this case, we’re talking about data, not MREs. Enter Litimetrics, “a legal technology engine for attorneys and their clients.”

What exactly is Litimetrics, what does it do, and why is it an important tool for today’s attorneys?

According to the company, Litimetrics is a data analytics platform providing lawyers and their clients with an advantage in the form of “competitive data-driven intelligence” regarding opposing counsel, firms, judges, and even certain outcomes involved in the litigation process. The platform uses machine learning and natural language processing to collect, structure, and mine millions of court records for valuable information.

As our lawyer readers know, things like settlement decisions, trial strategy, etc. are as much a mix of prior experience and “gut feeling” as they are hard facts. Litimetrics seeks to blend the two, augmenting the “gut feeling” with solid data. This information allows lawyers to look at items such as “their opponent’s litigation behavior and clients to verify the experience and performance” said opponents bring to the table.

Using the data available through Litimetrics, lawyers can:

  • Potentially avoid litigation by “accurately assessing the likelihood” that they opponents will settle;
  • “Prepare for newly-filed proceedings by analyzing opposing counsel and their behavior in previous cases;” and
  • Develop better strategies for litigation and settlement negotiations using data on “settlement timings and a judge’s rulings on motions.”

Litimetrics does that by providing access to:

  • “Outcomes of proceedings: Whether relief was granted or proceeding was dismissed;
  • Outcomes of certain motions: Dispositive motions including summary judgement;
  • Durations: Of the proceeding, until argument/trial, until disposition, time decisions reserved;
  • Classification of proceedings: Filter and search based on areas of law.”

Currently, Litimetrics only covers state courts in New York and California, but the company will extend coverage to other major jurisdictions in the coming months. In the two current jurisdictions covered, Litimetrics handles data regarding 40k+ law firms, 100k+ lawyers, 3k judges and 1.5M parties.

Access to Litimetrics starts at $99.00.

About Litimetrics

The company was established in 2016 and operates from Santa Monica, California. In 2017, the company attended startup accelerator Techstars in New York. Litimetrics maintains social media presence via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

The company, and co-founder Kelvin Tran, were included in this year’s Fastcase 50, “honoring the law’s smartest, most courageous innovators, techies, visionaries, & leaders.” That write-up follows:

“Gut instincts and hunches are getting a data infusion. Kelvin Tran is using data-driven intelligence to give attorneys and their clients competitive advantages in litigation: Litimetrics, a powerful provider of data on litigation behavior from courts in major jurisdictions. With machine learning and statistics, the Techstars startup is empowering attorneys to make better decisions based on real-time insights about durations, outcomes and behavioral patterns mined from millions of pages of court records. The company’s vision is that the humans involved in litigation (judges, attorneys, and their clients) have as much of an impact on the outcome of a proceeding as the factual scenario and legal principles do. With better data comes smarter decisions based on quantitative facts and fewer decisions based on anecdotal evidence or uneven experience.”

According to Ed Walters, CEO of Fastcase, “Every part of the legal market is changing right now – from law school through every part of the practice. That change can be daunting or discouraging to many people. And that’s one reason that our team enjoys celebrating the accomplishments of the Fastcase 50. These are people who inspire us by their intelligence, creativity, and leadership. We hope they will inspire others as well, especially during a time of great change for the profession.”

Fastcase is a provider of “industry-leading tools to make legal research easier and more intuitive.”
