After a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against him, Jim Carrey is making it known that he has no intentions of just rolling over and backing down. Rather, he decided to counter-sue his accusers, the family of his deceased girlfriend, Cathriona White.
After a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against him, Jim Carrey is making it known that he has no intentions of just rolling over and backing down. Rather, he decided to counter-sue his accusers, the family of his deceased girlfriend, Cathriona White. For those who don’t know, White, a makeup artist, and Carrey were in and out of relationships dating back to 2012. In September of 2015 the couple “ended their relationship for the second time,” and shortly after, White was found dead at her home in California after overdosing on a “cocktail of prescription drugs.”
White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton and her mother, Bridgid Sweetman, thought her death was a bit strange and proceeded to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey. In the lawsuit, Burton claimed that Carrey was responsible for White’s death because he provided her “with the pills she overdosed on and gave her sexually transmitted diseases, claims which were also made by White’s mother Brigid Sweetman in her own wrongful death lawsuit.”
At the time, Carrey’s lawyer defended him by arguing “that the claims made under drugs legislation were likely to fall outside the statute of limitations and said the wrongful death claims were too vague.” Despite his lawyer’s efforts, “Judge Deirdre Hill at Los Angeles Superior Court indicated that she would side with the prosecution.”
Despite the allegations against him and the fact that the Judge has made her position known, though, Carrey still went ahead and “filed a countersuit against White’s family and attorney.” In a statement on Twitter the actor said:
“I filed a cross-complaint against Filippo Marchino, The X Law Group, Mark Burton and Bridgid Sweetman. Unfortunately, I made the mistake three years ago and giving in and settling false claims made against me by Mr. Marchino, on behalf of Cat, as mounting public defense is a very costly and painful process. At the time I felt Cat was being exploited by Marchino. Since this new case was filed, I have discovered the depth of deception behind those false claims, the kind of deception decent people fall for, because to us, such behavior is unimaginable.”
In response to Carrey’s counter-suit, though, White’s family has been busy releasing documents that “White allegedly wrote to Carrey.” For example, the family recently released a “2013 iPad note…, in which she accuses him of introducing her to cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse, and disease.”
It will be interesting to see how this case plays out, and what other details will be revealed during the 20-day trial scheduled for April 2018.
