For many people, their dogs are part of their families, which is why a recent recall issued by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has many people on alert. Yesterday, the FDA “announced product recalls for two different brands of dog food” because, according to the agency, “dogs and humans who came into contact with recently manufactured products by Raws for Paws and Smokehouse Pet Products were found to be at risk of contracting salmonella.”
Of the two recalls, the first includes Smokehouse Beefy Munchies dog treats. According to the recall notice, the potentially contaminated treats are packaged in four-ounce bags and were “distributed in North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado, and Washington.” They have a use by date of October 25, 2019, and were initially recalled because the “Colorado Department of Agriculture found traces of salmonella in its normal testing process.”
The second recall includes “Raws for Paws Ground Turkey Pet Food, which also potentially carried salmonella.” According to the recall notice, the particular product was “sold in Wisconsin and Iowa, creating a possible Midwestern salmonella situation.” The pet food was sold in one or five-pound packages and was manufactured “between October and February.”
For now, the FDA is advising customers who purchased the pet food products to discontinue use. Customers who purchased the Beefy Munchies can “return whatever they have not used to the store for a refund,” while Raws for Paws customers can “call the company at 612-465-0372 for more information on returning the product.”
