In the same week that Idiotic RFG questioned Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s faith, the Notorious RBG’s shout-out to the U.S. Constitution was a fabulously shining moment during a gay wedding she officiated. The ceremony was Sunday, May 17.
It is widely known that RBG has been a staunch supporter of same-sex equality during her over two decades on the Supreme Court. Her keen mind and quick wit have made for some very entertaining as well as insightful and powerful moments and opinions. At 82, I’m fairly certain Notorious RBG could run circles around me and most of the legal eagles I know. In short, I think she’s incredible.
This isn’t the first gay wedding she’s officiated. She married economist John Roberts and Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser shortly after the death of DOMA in 2013. That same year, she said that the continually growing acceptance of same-sex marriage “reflected the ‘genius’ of the Constitution.”
Not that I want to detract from the inspiring celebration of love and commitment between the grooms last Sunday, but a particularly shining moment came when Justice Ginsburg pronounced the couple married by the powers vested in her by the Constitution of the United States. When RBG reached the word “Constitution,” she gave the crowd a sly look and put extra emphasis on it.
It’s only speculation as to whether she was expressing her personal beliefs with that emphasis or if she was hinting at the coming decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that will ultimately decide the legality of same-sex marriage. Either way, that moment, plus the honor of being married by RBG, certainly gave the happy couple a story that will never become dull in the retelling.
I wish the happy couple well in their marriage and send massive props to Notorious RBG for being the most impressive and downright cool judge on the scene.
