Coffee fans beware. A new voluntary recall has been issued by Bestherbs Coffee LLC for “New Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee” after an FDA laboratory reported the coffee contained “an ingredient similar to what’s in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.” The ingredient in question is desmethyl carbodenafil, and though the product has been “marketed as a male enhancement product, the recall was issued over the concern that some consumers might not be aware of the effects of desmethyl carbodenafil.” In fact, according to the FDA, the “undeclared chemical could pose problems when paired with nitrates, which are often found in drugs prescribed to “men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease.” Given how common these diseases are, it’s a good thing that the coffee is being recalled.
In addition to the undeclared chemical, the FDA report found that the ingredient list on the coffee’s packaging “failed to declare the presence of milk, which could make for a very unwelcome surprise for those with dairy allergies.”
So where was the product available? How many people had access to it and what should consumers do if they have the recalled products in their homes? Well, the products were available for purchase online between July 2014 and June 2016. This means people across the country had access to it. Fortunately, despite the undeclared ingredients, there have been no reported illnesses from ingesting the product, according to the FDA.
For now, customers are being urged to discontinue use and return their products to “Bestherbs Coffee LLC, 4250 Claremont Dr., Grand Prairie, Texas 75052 for a full refund.” For further details about the recall, customers can contact Bestherbs at 817-903-2288.
