Manuel Marin, the owner of several Presidente supermarkets, was recently hit with a wrongful death lawsuit and is “awaiting trial in criminal court on allegations he masterminded the savage murder of his wife’s secret lover.” According to the lawsuit, which was filed by the estate of Camilo Salazar, Salazar’s “body was discovered on a rural dirt road in West Miami-Dade in June 2011.” The police report noted that he had been beaten. Additionally, his throat was slit and his groin was burned.
In addition to naming Mr. Marin as a defendant, the suit also names his son, Yaddiel Marin, “who prosecutors say funded Marin’s seven-year jaunt as a fugitive in Spain, and Maria Marin, Yaddiel’s mother.” The suit argues that Maria and Yaddiel “helped Manuel Marin move money before the murder in anticipation of the crime, and were necessary and pivotal participants in his flight from the law.”
The suit was filed earlier this month by Daisy Lewis Holcombe, Salazar’s widow. In a statement, Benjamin Widlanski, the attorney representing the family, said:
“The last seven years have been incredibly difficult for the entire family: they lost a father, son, brother and husband in the most heinous of ways. We will aggressively seek a just and speedy resolution of our claims to allow the family to finally get the closure it has waited for.”
Prior to his death, Salazar had secretly “reconnected with Jenny Marin, an old flame, and the two had a secret affair starting sometime after 2008.” The suit noted that Salazar “was not perfect.”
At the time of the alleged affair, Jenny Marin was married to Manuel Marin. Eventually, Mr. Marin “discovered the affair and even confronted the two at a coffee shop.” According to prosecutors, Mrs. Marin wanted to divorce Mr. Marin and “refused to reconcile, driving Manuel Marin to murder. The lawsuit itself was filed by Widlansk, an attorney with the law firm Kozyak, Tropin & Throckmorton.
What happened, though? How did Mr. Marin carry out the murder? Well, according to homicide detectives, Marin “recruited a boxing promoter and two mixed-martial-arts fighters to help him kidnap, torture and murder Salazar on June 1, 2011.” Three days after the incident, he gathered up his passport and other valuable documents and “fled to Europe.” According to police, the key piece of evidence was that, that night, “Marin’s phone was used in the same area where Salazar’s corpse was later discovered, and toll records also showed him driving near where the body was found.”
In addition to Mr. Marin, his mother, and son, two others were implicated in Salazar’s death. According to police, Alexis Vila Perdomo has been arrested and “charged with conspiracy to commit murder.” It turns out, he “helped arrange and plan the killing while he was in Las Vegas training for a fight.” Next, Roberto Isaac has also been jailed over allegations that he “helped carry out the kidnapping and killing.”
Mr. Marin was arrested earlier this year at the U.S. Embassy and “extradited to Miami in November.”
