Do you enjoy the occasional bowl of cereal for breakfast? If so, you may want to steer away from Kellogg’s Honey Smacks for the time being. Just recently the popular breakfast cereal was recalled over concerns that certain boxes may be contaminated with Salmonella. Unfortunately, before the potential contamination was detected, the “product was distributed throughout the United States and there have been reported illnesses.”
According to the recall notice, Kellogg Company has so far voluntarily recalled “15.3 oz. and 23 oz. packages of Honey Smacks,” and at the moment no other products are affected by the recall. The issue itself was discovered after Kellogg Company launched an investigation after the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) contacted it about concerns that the reported illnesses may have been connected to Honey Smacks manufactured by a third-party manufacturer.
It’s important to note, however, that not all boxes of Honey Smacks are included in the recall. So how can consumers tell if the box of Honey Smacks in their cupboard is potentially contaminated and part of the recall? For starters, according to the recall notice, the “affected product includes the following varieties distributed across the United States as well as limited distribution in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guam, Tahiti, and Saipan:
- Honey Smacks, 3800039103, 15.3 oz, JUN 14, 2018 through JUN 14, 2019
- Honey Smacks, 3800014810, 23 oz, JUN 14, 2018 through JUN 14, 2019
Because Salmonella is so serious, Kellogg Company is advising consumers who purchased potentially contaminated boxes of the recalled cereal to contact it for a refund. More information regarding the recall can be found by visiting kelloggs.com/honeysmacksrecall or calling 1-800-962-1413 from Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET as well as Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET, according to the recall notice.
For those who don’t know, consuming products “contaminated with Salmonella may result in serious illness” and can be fatal to “young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” Common symptoms associated with Salmonella poisoning may include “fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”
