CHARLESTON, SC — Laura Johnson Evans, Shumaker Partner and Health Law National Service Line Leader, has been named a 2024 Influential Women of Law by South Carolina Lawyers Weekly. The award spotlights the important role women leaders play in the Carolinas legal community.
“It is an honor to be recognized on this list of extraordinary lawyers who are committed to supporting and advancing women in the legal sector across the country,” Laura said.
Laura is not a stranger to such legal honors and has also been recognized as a “Power Player” by North and South Carolina Lawyers Weekly (2023); Legal Elite in Healthcare (2023) and Legal Elite of the Lowcountry in Healthcare (2017) by Charleston Business Magazine; Diversity & Inclusion Awards Honoree (2021) by South Carolina Lawyers Weekly; and a Woman Leader in the Law (2020) by National Law Journal/ALM. In addition, Laura is ranked in Chambers USA for Healthcare in South Carolina (2022, 2023), and she was named to Best Lawyers in America (2024). She currently serves as the Chair of the South Carolina Bar’s Health Law Section and serves on the Executive Committee of the Charleston County Bar.
With 30 years of experience, clients call on Laura when they need a health care lawyer who is experienced in the everyday, operational aspects of the industry. After litigating complex health care, toxic tort, and product liability cases for seven years, Laura served as in-house counsel for Roper St. Francis Healthcare, a Charleston-based health care system with two acute care hospitals, as well as numerous ancillary facilities and physician practices. While in-house, she oversaw a wide variety of corporate, operational, compliance, risk management, and medical staff matters, as well as managing outside counsel. Her current practice is focused on providing outside general counsel services to health care providers of all types, corporate transactions, risk management, and compliance.
Laura is certified as a mediator/arbitrator in the State of South Carolina and a certified neutral by the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA).
Dedicated to pro bono service, Laura led the Charleston County Bar’s response to the Mother Emanuel tragedy (which provided over 1500 hours of pro bono legal assistance to the victims’ families and survivors) for which she was named the South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.
Laura is one of 22 attorneys selected for their leadership, business acumen, mentoring and community involvement, and contribution to the legal field.
