They are part of the more than 36,000 patients-turned-advocates featured in the Netflix Original documentary “The Bleeding Edge” premiering July 27.

Patient safety advocates plan to hold a daylong protest rally at Bayer U.S. headquarters in Whippany, N.J. on July 17, including broadcasting a sneak preview of a gripping new Netflix Original documentary, “The Bleeding Edge,” which details the stories of women battling Bayer over the pain and suffering they say is caused by its implantable birth control device Essure.

“The Bleeding Edge,” produced by the acclaimed investigative film team behind the groundbreaking Oscar-nominated films “The Hunting Ground” and “The Invisible War,” premieres on Netflix on July 27.

Angie Firmalino, the founder of the Essure Problems support group, will attend the rally and be available for interviews regarding her experience with Essure, which has been taken off the market throughout the world and patient safety advocates say should be banned in the U.S. as well. There are currently more than 16,000 lawsuits against Bayer from patients harmed by Essure.

Essure is an inch-long permanently implanted birth control device that is inserted through the cervix into the fallopian tubes – the tubes that carry the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Over a period of approximately three months, scar tissue forms around the inserts. The build-up of tissue creates a barrier that keeps sperm from reaching the eggs, thus preventing conception.

Patients implanted with Essure have experienced a wide range of very serious adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, migration of inserts to the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmune diseases, and fetal death.”
