Swiss Rolls, Bread Sold at Walmart Recalled Nationwide Over Salmonella Concerns

Do you have a box of Swiss Rolls in your cupboard? If so, this recall is for you. Earlier this week, Georgia-based Flowers Foods, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of “several brands of Swiss Rolls and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread from stores” throughout the country over concerns the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

Earlier this week, Georgia-based Flowers Foods, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of “several brands of Swiss Rolls and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread from stores” throughout the country over concerns the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

The specific products included in the recall are Swiss Rolls “sold under the brand names Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square and Great Value.” The recalled Swiss Rolls have ‘Best Buy’ dates “on or between September 17 and October 19.” Additionally, Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread is included in the recall and was “distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.” The ‘Best Buy’ dates for the bread are “on or between July 16 and July 28.”

The potential salmonella contamination was discovered by a third-party whey powder manufacturer and supplier that eventually initiated the recall. Fortunately, there have been no illness reports related to the recalled products. Anyone who has a box of the Swiss Rolls or bread should either thrown them away or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Salmonella isn’t something to mess around with. It’s a serious illness caused by an organism that causes serious infections in children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone else with a weakened immune system. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, among others. In rare cases, salmonella infection can affect the bloodstream. When this happens, the illness can become more severe and even fatal.
