The Pork Rind Factory Recalls over 18,000 Lbs. of Pork due to Allergen Mislabeling

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Thursday that the recall is due to the products containing milk and soy, which are possible allergens, without providing that information on the product label.


The Spartanburg, South Carolina-based snack food manufacturer The Pork Rind Factory has issued a recall of several types of its pork rind snacks. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Thursday that the recall is due to the products containing milk and soy, which are possible allergens, without providing that information on the product label. In total, the company recalled 18,406 pounds of pork rinds which were shipped to retailers in South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The labeling error was detected by FSIS personnel conducting a routine inspection on September 9th. The affected snacks were produced between March 17th and September 3rd. According to the recall alert, the products will contain the establishment number “EST. M888” inside their USDA marks of inspection.

The products listed on the FSIS recall alert include:

  • 2.25 ounce clear plastic bag packages containing multiple pieces of fried pork rinds with the label “Suncrest Farms Salt and Pepper Pork Skins” and a use-by date of 09/16/15, 01/12/16, 02/15/16.
  • 2.25 ounce clear plastic bag packages containing multiple pieces of fried pork rinds with the label “Suncrest Farms Hot Pork Skins” and a use-by date of 12/27/15, 12/21/15.
  • 4.00 ounce clear plastic bag packages containing multiple pieces of fried pork rinds with the label “Food Lion Salt & Pepper Flavored Pork Rinds” and a use-by date of 9/12/15, 9/26/15, 10/10/15, 10/24/15, 11/26/15, 12/15/15, 12/17/15, 01/01/16.
  • 3.00 ounce clear plastic bag packages containing multiple pieces of fried pork rinds with the label “Larry’s Old-Fashioned Seasoned Pork Cracklin Strips” and a use-by date of 10/24/15, 11/20/15.
  • 3.00 ounce clear plastic bag packages containing multiple pieces of fried pork rinds with the label “Larry’s Old-Fashioned Seasoned Pork Fatback Curls” and a use-by date of 11/20/2015.

According to the USDA, no illnesses or injuries have been reported due to the recall, hover the agency recommends anyone who falls ill after consuming any of the products to consult a health provider. Consumers with questions about the recall are urged to call Plant Manager Terri Morey at 864) 573-5678, or they can contact the USDA’s meat and poultry helpline at (888) 674-6854. Established in 2009, The Pork Rind Factory makes the snacks under several different names in addition to those listed on the recall alert. These brands include: Terry’s, Brim’s, Piggly Wiggly, River Rock, Fat Sack, and Country Time. Replications of the labels of the recalled products can be found in PDF form below:
