Trader Joe’s, Kroger Involved in Massive Recall Over Parasite Scare

— August 1, 2018

If you’re a fan of salads and wraps from Kroger, Aldi, and Walgreens, you may want to pay attention to one of the more recent recalls from the United States Department of Agriculture. According to an FSIS alert issued Monday, consumers should be on alert of “potential contamination of beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products distributed by an Indianapolis-based food supplier,” Caito Foods LLC. What type of contamination should consumers look out for, though?

If you’re a fan of salads and wraps from Kroger, Aldi, and Walgreens, you may want to pay attention to one of the more recent recalls from the United States Department of Agriculture. According to an FSIS alert issued Monday, consumers should be on alert of “potential contamination of beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products distributed by an Indianapolis-based food supplier,” Caito Foods LLC. What type of contamination should consumers look out for, though?

According to the recall alert, the FSIS claimed that some salads and wrap products sold at Kroger, Aldi, and Walgreens stores across the country may be contaminated with Cyclospora, an intestinal parasite. According to the notice, Caito Foods, the supplier of the potentially contaminated products, discovered the issue “when their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, sent notification that the chopped romaine used in some of their salads and wraps was being recalled.”

The salads and wraps included in the recall were all “produced between July 15-18, with a ‘best by,’ ‘enjoy by,’ ‘best if sold by’ or ‘sell by’ date ranging from July 18-23.” Additionally, the products “also include the establishment number ‘EST. 39985 or P-39985’ near the USDA mark of inspection,” according to the notice.

At the moment, the distributor is working diligently with the FSIS to remove the potentially contaminated products from the stores included in the recall. Anyone who purchased one of the recalled products should either return them for a refund or toss them in the trash. For more information about the recalled products or to see a full list of the recalled products, labels, code numbers and identifying information, visit fsis.usda.gov.

If you think you may have consumed one of the recalled products and are concerned about falling ill, reach out to your healthcare provider. For those not familiar with Cyclospora cayetanesis, it’s an intestinal parasite that has an incubation period ranging between two and 14 days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms may include diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, fatigue and flu-like symptoms.
