Walmart, Whole Foods Among Brands Involved in Massive Corn Recall

— October 18, 2018

If you’re a fan of buying prepared salads at your local grocery store, this recall notice is for you. Earlier this week, GHSE, a company based in Green Cove Springs, Florida, issued a recall of “738 pounds of ready-to-eat salads that contain corn that may be contaminated with salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. So far, the potential contamination has affected prepared salads sold at popular retailers such as Whole Foods, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s.

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported related to the recall, and the specific products included in the recall include “Walmart brand Marketside’s ‘Fiesta Salad with Steak‘” prepared salads sold in 15.25-ounce plastic clamshells. The particular salads were “shipped to retail locations in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina,” and are labeled with the establishment number EST. 45781 inside the USDA inspection mark.

In addition to the recall issued by GHSE, GH Foods of Sacramento, California, issued a recall of its own for an estimated “940 pounds of ready-to-eat salad sold at Whole Foods.” Why? It turns out the corn in the Whole Foods ready-to-eat salads may also be contaminated with salmonella and listeria.

While neither Walmart or Whole Foods have identified the corn supplier, it’s important to note that listeria and salmonella are serious food-borne illnesses that may result in life-threatening complications in certain individuals. If you’re worried you may have consumed one of the recalled products and think you may have salmonella or listeria, contact your healthcare provider. The elderly, pregnant women, infants, and people with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to both diseases.
